Gadzhibekov, Sultan Ismail Ogly 

Born May 8, 1919, in the city of Shusha, in what is now Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, Azerbaijan SSR; died Sept. 19, 1974, in Baku. Soviet composer. People’s Artist of the USSR (1973). Member of the CPSU from 1953.

In 1946, Gadzhibekov graduated from the Azerbaijan Conservatory, where he had studied composition under B. I. Zeidman. From 1938 to 1940 he was a conductor at the Baku Theater of Musical Comedy. Gadzhibekov became the artistic director of the Azerbaijan Philharmonic Society in 1948; from 1955 to 1962 he was director of the philharmonic society. He became an instructor at the Azerbaijan Conservatory in 1948, a professor in 1965, and rector in 1969.

Gadzhibekov’s works include the ballet Giul’shen (1950), the musical comedy Kyzyl Giul’ (The Red Rose; 1940), the children’s opera Iskander and the Shepherd (1947), two symphonies (1944 and 1946), and a concerto for orchestra (1964).

Gadzhibekov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1952 and the U. Gadzhibekov State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1970. Gadzhibekov was awarded two orders and various medals.
