Ormanov, Gali 

Born Aug. 2 (15), 1907, in present-day Kapal Raion, Taldy-Kurgan Oblast. Soviet Kazakh poet. Member of the CPSU since 1938.

Ormanov graduated from the Kazakh Institute of Public Education in 1929. From 1940 to 1943 he studied at the Kazakh Pedagogical Institute. He worked on the editorial staffs of newspapers and journals of the Kazakh republic. From 1939 to 1946, Ormanov was Dzhambul Dzhabaev’s secretary.

Ormanov’s first works appeared in 1927. His first poetry collection, The Hoop, was published in 1934. He is the author of the poetry collections A Woman’s Confession (1936), The Oak (1945), The Song of Life (1948), The Wave (1956), The Wings of Thought (1959), and The Flaming River (1965). Ormanov also published the short-story collections Ascent (1935) and The Heart (1963). His works deal principally with contemporary life.

Ormanov has translated works by A. S. Pushkin, M. Iu. Lermontov, L. N. Tolstoy, A. P. Chekhov, Nizami Ganjevi, J. Rainis, and S. A. Esenin into Kazakh. He was secretary of the board of the Writers’ Union of the Kazakh SSR from 1959 to 1963. Ormanov has received the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and a number of medals.
