Galilean satelliteAny of the four large satellites of Jupiter discovered by Galileo in 1610. In order of distance from Jupiter: Io (the most volcanically active body in the solar system), Europa (suspected to contain a liquid ocean under its frozen surface), Ganymede (the largest satellite in the solar system), and Callisto. Both Ganymede and Callisto are larger than Pluto and Mercury. |

The orbital periods of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter, many asteroids' orbits, Jupiter's orbit, and Pluto's orbit with Neptune are some examples. Among other celestial offerings is a decent view of Jupiter and its four Galilean satellites (moons) - so named because Galileo was the first to see them. Finally, Galileo will settle in for two years of photographing and measuring the Jovian system, including the planet itself and the three other big Galilean satellites -- Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. |
