Galván, Manuel de Jesús
Born 1834 in Santo Domingo; died there 1910. Dominican writer. Galván is the author of the historical novel Enriquillo (1882; Russian translation, 1963), which is about the struggle of a leader of one of the Haitian Indian tribes for freedom and independence. The novel was based on a painstaking study of historical sources. It is imbued with the romantic spirit and vividly recreates scenes from the period.
