Gamble Plantation Historic State Park Location: In Ellenton on US 301 East. Facilities: Historic home, picnic tables, restrooms (é), visitor center. Activities: Guided tours. Special Features: The only surviving plantation house in South Florida, the antebellum mansion was the home of Major Robert Gamble and headquarters to an extensive sugar plantation. It is believed that Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin took refuge in the house after the fall of the Confederacy, until his safe passage to England could be secured.
