gamboge (gămbōj`) [Fr.,=Cambodia], an intensely yellow pigment pigment, substance that imparts color to other materials. In paint, the pigment is a powdered substance which, when mixed in the liquid vehicle, imparts color to a painted surface.

Gamboge is a gum resin consisting of resin (70 to 80 percent) and gum (20 to 27 percent). It forms a yellow emulsion with water.
