Gamow-Teller selection rules [¦ga‚mof ′tel·ər si′lek·shən ‚rülz]

(nuclear physics)

Selection rules for beta decay caused by the Gamow-Teller interaction; that is, in an allowed transition there is no parity change of the nuclear state, and the spin of the nucleus can either remain unchanged or change by ±1; transitions from spin 0 to spin 0 are excluded, however.
