Gannett, Frank Ernest (1876–1957) newspaper publisher; born near Rochester, N.Y. He founded the Gannett Group, which at his death embraced 22 papers and seven broadcasting stations. Gannett bought his first paper, the Elmira (N.Y.) Gazette, in 1906; he was known for his skill in acquiring papers, streamlining their operations, and making them successful while editorially autonomous.
