García Robles, Alfonso (älfôn`sō gärsē`ä rō`blās), 1911–91, Mexican statesman, b. Zamora, Mex. After studying law in Europe, he entered the Mexican foreign service in 1939. He was a delegate to the San Francisco Conference (1945), the birthplace of the United Nations. He served as Mexican ambassador to Brazil and held key diplomatic positions; during this time García Robles became internationally known for his staunch support of nuclear disarmament. He was a sponsor of the Treaty of Tlateloco (1967), under which 22 Latin American nations vowed to ban nuclear weapons, and an author of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (1968). In 1982 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Alva Myrdal Myrdal, Alva (äl`vä mĭr`däl, Swed. mür`däl), 1902–86, Swedish sociologist, diplomat, and political leader. .....
