Garda

a lake in northern Italy, in the foothills of the Alps, with the southern portion on the Lombardy lowlands. Situated at an altitude of 65 m, area, 370 sq km; depth, up to 346 m. Lake Garda’s basin is a tectonic depression formed by late Pleistocene glaciers. Its northern part, narrow and long, resembles a fjord, framed by ranges that reach 2,000 m in height. The southern part is broader, formed from moraine deposits. The Sarca River flows into its northern end, and the Mincio River out of its southern end; the latter is a left tributary of the Po. The lake is navigable. It has health resorts (Limone sul Garda, Gardone Riviera, Brenzone, Garda).
