In west-central NE, southeast of Scottsbluff; organized Nov 2, 1909 from Devel County. Name Origin: Named by John T. and William R. Twiford, the developers who thought it would become the "garden spot of the west."

Area (sq mi): 1731.00 (land 1704.40; water 26.60). Pop per sq mi: 1.20.
Pop 2005: 1,997. State rank: 78. Pop change: 2000-20005 -12.90%; 1990-2000 -6.80%. Pop 2000: 2,292 (White 97.30%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.30%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 45.60.
Income 2000: per capita $15,414; median household $26,458; Pop below poverty level: 14.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,657-$25,644.
Unemployment 2004: 3.50%. Change from 2000: 0.40%. Median travel time to work: 14.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 13.50%.
