Gárdonyi, Géza
Born Aug. 3, 1863, in Agard; died Oct. 30, 1922, in Eger. Hungarian writer; became a newspaper worker in 1888. Gárdonyi’s novella The Lantern (1896) tells of rural life of the mid-19th century, and his short stories realistically portray the life of the peasants and rural intelligentsia (the collection My Village, 1898). He was the author of poems (the collection April, 1894) and historical novels about the struggle against the Turkish conquerors (The Stars of Eger, 1901; Russian translation, 1956; and others).
