Garey, Thomas Andrew, 1830–1909, American pioneer in citrus culture, b. Cincinnati. He traveled from Iowa to California by ox team (1849–52). In 1865 he built a citrus nursery on land now a commercial street in Los Angeles. The market for young citrus trees grew, and Garey introduced new varieties, among them a lemon that he called Garey's Eureka. It became one of two main varieties of lemon grown in California. His Orange Culture in California (1882) was a valuable work. How to thank TFD for its existence?
