In south-central OK, east of Ada; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Chickasaw lands. Name Origin: For Samuel J. Garvin, a leader of the Chickasaw Nation.

Pop 2005: 27,228. State rank: 34. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.10%; 1990-2000 2.30%. Pop 2000: 27,210 (White 83.40%; Black or African American 2.60%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 0.20%; Other 12.20%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 39.00.
