Name Origin: For the Gasconade River, which runs through it. It is believed that French residents of Saint Louis gave this name to the river and general area for the bragging of the inhabitants when they went to Saint Louis; an allusion to the residents of the French province of Gascony, supposed to be boastful. Area (sq mi): 526.09 (land 520.67; water 5.43). Pop per sq mi: 30.20. Pop 2005: 15,745. State rank: 67. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.60%; 1990-2000 9.50%. Pop 2000: 15,342 (White 98.40%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.40%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.00%). Foreign born: 0.50%. Median age: 40.30. Income 2000: per capita $17,319; median household $35,047; Pop below poverty level: 9.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,444-$23,237. Unemployment 2004: 6.10%. Change from 2000: 0.80%.
