Gassner, Johann Gustav 

Born Jan. 17, 1881, in Berlin; died Feb. 5, 1955, in Lüneburg. German botanist.

Gassner graduated from the University of Berlin in 1905 as a doctor of philosophy and of natural sciences. He was a member of the Leopoldina German Academy of Naturalists and the Swedish Academy of Agriculture. Beginning in 1906 he worked in botanical and agricultural research institutes in Berlin, Montevideo, Hamburg, Rostock, Braunschweig, Ankara, and Magdeburg. He became president of a union of agricultural and forestry institutions in 1946. His principal work was in phytopathology and plant physiology, including studies of cereal diseases, such as rust and smut, as well as works on photosynthesis, plant nutrition, the influence of mineral fertilizers on photosynthetic rates, and the effects of lowered temperatures on the development of winter rye.
