Gates, Thomas S. (Sovereign) (1873–1948) banker, university president; born in Germantown, Pa. He was a partner at Drexel and Company (1918–30) and J. P. Morgan and Company (1921–30) before assuming the presidency of the University of Pennsylvania (1930–44).
