Gorelov, Gavriil Nikitich 

Born Mar. 22 (Apr. 3). 1880, in the village of Pokrovskoe. in present-day Volokolamsk Raion. Moscow Oblast; died Aug. 16. 1966, in Moscow. Soviet painter. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1947), member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1953).

Gorelov studied in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1903 to 1911 with I. E. Repin and F. A. Rubo. In 1911 he began to participate in the exhibitions of the peredvizhniki (the “wanderers,” a progressive art movement). He joined the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia in 1924. Gorelov painted historical scenes that included many figures—for example. The Execution of Pugachev (1925, Central Museum of the Revolution of the USSR, Moscow), The Bolotnikov Uprising (1944, the Saratov A. N. Radishchev State Art Museum), and Orgy in the Apartments of Pope Alexander VI of Borgia. He also did a sketch. The Battle of Chongarskii Bridge, for the panorama The Storming of Perekop (1937–38, in cooperation with A. K. Kulikov) and a number of genre paintings and portraits of steelworkers of the Serp i Molot Plant: A. S. Sub-botin and I. V. Grachev (both 1949, in the Tret’iakov Gallery) and M. G. Gusarov With His Brigade (1949, Russian Museum in Leningrad; State Prize of the USSR in 1950).
