Gavriil Gustavson

Gustavson, Gavriil Gavriilovich 

Born Dec. 22, 1842, (Jan. 3, 1843), in St. Petersburg; died there Apr. 13 (26), 1908. Russian organic chemist. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1894).

Gustavson graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1894, he was a student of D. I. Mendeleev and A. M. Butlerov. In 1875, he became a professor of organic and agronomic chemistry at the Petrovskoe Agricultural and Forestry Academy in Moscow. From 1892 to 1900 he taught at the Advanced Courses for Women in St. Petersburg. Gustavson investigated the effect of aluminum halides on organic compounds (1883) and showed that aromatic hydrocarbons can form unstable complex compounds with aluminum halides. Together with N. Ia. Dem’ianov he synthesized the hydrocarbon aliene. Gustavson proposed a new method of synthesizing cyclopropane by treating a water and alcohol solution of 1,3-dibromopropane with zinc dust. He also obtained 1,1-dimethylpropane and synthesized chloride derivatives of cyclopropane.
