Gaza, Theodore (gā`zə, gä`–), c.1398–c.1478, Greek scholar, b. Salonica. When the Turks attacked Constantinople, he went to Italy, where he became one of the greatest classical scholars and humanists of the Renaissance. His patrons included the Este family, Pope Nicholas V, and Cardinal Bessarion Bessarion (bĕsâr`ēən), 1395?–1472, Byzantine humanist, cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

. Gaza was responsible for spreading Greek learning from Ferrara, Rome, and Naples. His Greek grammar was printed by Aldus Manutius in 1495.
