Name Origin: For John White Geary (1819-73), territorial governor of KS (1856-57) and governor of PA (1867-73). Originally named by the pro-Southern legislature for Jefferson Davis, U.S. secretary of war (1853-57) and later president of the Confederacy. Area (sq mi): 404.39 (land 384.69; water 19.70). Pop per sq mi: 63.90. Pop 2005: 24,585. State rank: 24. Pop change: 2000-20005 -12.00%; 1990-2000 -8.20%. Pop 2000: 27,947 (White 61.50%; Black or African American 22.00%; Hispanic or Latino 8.50%; Asian 3.20%; Other 10.70%). Foreign born: 7.30%. Median age: 29.10.
