Gel’man, Khristofor Ivanovich

Born 1848; died 1902. Russian microbiologist and epizootiologist. Master of veterinary sciences (1879).

Gel’man graduated from the Dorpat Veterinary Institute in 1872. He served in the armed forces as a veterinarian in a cavalry regiment. In 1886, in St. Petersburg, Gel’man opened the second station for inoculation against rabies in Russia (the first was in Odessa). He was one of the first in the world to prepare an immune serum against anthrax. Independently of R. Koch, he discovered tuberculin. In 1890, at the same time as O. Kal’ning and independently of him, he discovered mallein (a diagnostic preparation from the bacterium that causes glanders), and experimented in applying it. Gel’man helped to organize the Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg, and in 1890 he was elected its first member.
