General Court
highest judicial body in the Left-bank Ukraine. It arose in the course of the Ukrainian people’s war of liberation of 1648-54. At its head was a general judge, who was one of the assistants to the hetmán and was elected by the cossack host starshina (dominant people). The General Court was the appellate instance for regimental district courts and handled cases involving the cossack host starshina. It was a tool for the class domination of the Ukrainian feudal lords. The General Court was abolished in 1783 with the extension to the Ukraine of the general Russian legal and administrative system.
