generalized other

the general concept of ‘other SOCIAL ACTORS’ which individuals abstract from the common elements they find in the attitudes and actions of others. According to G. H. MEAD, whose term this is, it is by ‘taking the role of the generalized other’ that the individual internalizes shared values and thus is able to engage in complex cooperative processes.
