Gennadii Ivanovich Tsitovich

Tsitovich, Gennadii Ivanovich 

Born July 25 (Aug. 7), 1910, in the village of Novyi Pogost, in what is now Miory Raion, Vitebsk Oblast. Soviet musicologist, ethnomusicologist, and choral conductor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1968).

Tsitovich graduated from the Vilnius Conservatory in 1939. He organized the State Folk Chorus of the Byelorussian SSR in 1952 and served as its artistic director until 1974; he also arranged folk songs for the group. In 1974 and 1975 he was a senior research worker at the Institute of Art Studies, Ethnography, and Folklore of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR.

Tsitovich has compiled several collections of folk music. His theoretical works are devoted to the comparative study of the musical art of the Slavic peoples, to Byelorussian folk polyphony, to folk performance, to a stylistic analysis of the modern folk song, and to the musical life of the modern village.

Tsitovich received the Byelorussian Lenin Komsomol Prize in 1968, and he has been awarded three orders and various medals.
