Genovese, Eugene D.

Genovese, Eugene D. (Dominick) (1930–  ) historian; born in New York City. Educated at Brooklyn College and Columbia University (Ph.D. 1959), he adopted a Marxist approach to analyzing history. He is best known for his works on American slavery, particularly Roll Jordan Roll: The World the Slaves Made (1974), winner of the Bancroft (1975) and other awards, and notable for its account of the slaves' daily life. He taught at Rutgers, Sir George Williams University (Montreal), and the University of Rochester (1969).
