Genovese, Eugene D. (Dominick) (1930– ) historian; born in New York City. Educated at Brooklyn College and Columbia University (Ph.D. 1959), he adopted a Marxist approach to analyzing history. He is best known for his works on American slavery, particularly Roll Jordan Roll: The World the Slaves Made (1974), winner of the Bancroft (1975) and other awards, and notable for its account of the slaves' daily life.
