a greenish crystalline substance, obtained from rosaniline, that forms a violet solution in water, used as an indicator, antiseptic, and in the treatment of burns gentian violet [′jen·chən ′vī·lət] (organic chemistry) Gentian Violet a medicinal preparation that is an anthelmintic and antiseptic agent. Gentian violet is administered internally for helminthic diseases such as enterobiasis and strongyloidiasis, and externally—in solution or salve —for pyoderma, sycosis, and some other skin diseases.
