Geochemistry and Analytic Chemistry, Institute of

(full name, V. I. Vernadskii Institute of Geochemistry and Analytic Chemistry; GEOKhl), a scientific research institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, organized in 1947 out of the Laboratory for Geochemical Problems, which had been founded on the initiative of V. I. Vernadskii in Moscow in 1929. The main direction of geochemical research is the working out of the physicochemical theory of geologic processes with the goal of creating theoretical foundations for geochemical methods of the locating and prognosis of mineral deposits, as well as the study of matter from outer space and of atomic geochemical processes. In the analytical chemistry department the theory of analytical chemistry is expanded, and methods of separating elements as well as the latest instrumental methods of their identification are being worked out. Results of researches are published in periodicals— Geokhimiia (Geochemistry; since 1956) and Zhurnal analiticheskoi khimii (Journal of Analytic Chemistry; since 1946)—and monographs. The institute was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1967.
