Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry, Institute of (IGEM)
a scientific research institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. It was founded in Moscow in 1956, when the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Institute of Geologic Sciences was divided. As a result of the division the Geologic Institute and the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry were established. It has departments of endogenous ore deposits, exogenous ore deposits, physical-chemical experimentation, petrography, metamorphism and metasomatism, nonmetallic mineral products, mineralogy, and geochemistry. Its main scientific tasks are elaboration of a theory of the formation and distribution of mineral products in connection with endogenous and exogenous processes, explanation of the regularities of the development of magma, formation of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and minerals, and research on minerals and their origins.
