Geometric styleStyle of vase painting that flourished in Athens c. 1000–700 BC. Vases decorated in this style feature horizontal bands filled with geometric patterns such as zigzags, triangles, and swastikas in dark paint on a light ground. The rhythmic effect is similar to that of basketry. The abstract motifs developed into stylized animal and human forms in such narrative scenes as funerals, dances, and boxing matches. Small bronze and clay figurines, elaborately decorated fibulas, and limestone seals were also produced. The patterns remained popular and influenced much later Greek art. |

| As the son of a bricklayer whose life reflected the successes of the practical arts in the economic and social culture of early modern England, Ben Jonson is the figure who emblematized how this understanding of geometric art was brought into the theater, and yet who ultimately most distanced himself from its implications. Placed in different arrangements, the fragments form either abstract figures that nonetheless consistently breach the austerity of geometric art, or else figurative personages, a bunch of absurd puppets or escaped circus clowns--in either case irreverently commenting on the dryness and lack of spontaneity in so much contemporary art.
