The intense lower tropospheric geopotential height gradients north and east of each cyclone resulted in strong 850 mb onshore jets, a key element in providing moisture convergence over the Megalopolis (Kocin and Uccellini 2004a). HiRDLS is a 21-channel infrared Earth-limb scanning radiometer that will monitor the upper tropospheric, stratospheric, and mesospheric temperature, trace chemicals and geopotential height gradients over a five-year observation period. This study selects a single geopotential height for all periods and for both hemispheres. |
