Goian, Georg Iosifovich

(pseudonym of G. I. Ter-Nikogosian). Born Nov. 10 (23), 1901, in Tbilisi. Soviet theatrical scholar. Honored Art Worker of the Armenian SSR (1961) and doctor of the arts (1949). Member of the CPSU since 1930.

Goian graduated from the State Institute of Theatrical Arts (1935) and the Institute of the Red Professoriat (1938). He began his literary career in 1921. In 1936 he began teaching at the State Institute of Theatrical Arts, becoming a professor in 1949, and in 1958 he became head of the institute’s sub-department of the theater of the peoples of the USSR. His works are devoted to the theatrical art of the peoples of the USSR—Russian (The Development of Russian Theater, 1939, and Glikeriia Fedotova, 1940) and Tadzhik (A Theater Born in October: A History of Tadzhik Dramatic Art, 1943). His major work is 2,000 Years of Armenian Theater (vols. 1–2, 1952). Goian’s articles have been combined into an anthology, What Is National Theater? (1970).
