Born June 17, 1859, in Breslau; died May 13, 1931, in Halle. German scholar and specialist in classical philology and Roman religion.

Wissowa became a professor at the University of Marburg in 1886 and at Halle in 1895. A new multivolume edition of Paulys’ encyclopedia of classical antiquities (Paulys Real-Encyclopadie der classischen Altertums-wissenschaft) began to be published in 1893 under Wissowa’s direction.
