George, Walter F. (Franklin) (1878–1957) U.S. senator; born in Preston, Ga. A lawyer and judge, he went on to the U.S. Senate (Dem., Ga.; 1922–57). Although opposed to many of President Franklin Roosevelt's domestic policies, he supported U.S. participation in World War II, the United Nations, and NATO.
