On the southeastern border of MS, north of Pascagoula; organized Mar 16, 1810 (prior to statehood) from Greene and Jackson counties. Name Origin: For Gen. James Zachariah George (1826-97), Confederate army officer and U.S. senator from MS (1881-97).

Pop 2005: 21,259. State rank: 45. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.00%; 1990-2000 14.80%. Pop 2000: 19,144 (White 88.70%; Black or African American 8.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 1.30%. Median age: 33.30.
