Dawe, George 

Born Feb. 8, 1781, in London; died Oct. 15, 1829, in Kentish Town. English painter.

From 1819 to 1829, Dawe worked in St. Petersburg, where, assisted by the Russian painters V. A. Golike and A. V. Poliakov, he painted 329 half-length portraits of generals who had participated in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the campaigns of 1813-14, large portraits of M. I. Kutuzov and M. B. Barclay-de-Tolly (both in 1829), and four portraits of veterans (1828; all the portraits named are in the Gallery of the Patriotic War of 1812 at the Hermitage in Leningrad). Dawe also executed private commissions. His portraits are imbued with romantic elation. They contain animated characterizations and reveal the artist’s virtuosity.
