Georgiev, Georgii Pavlovich
Born Feb. 4, 1933, in Leningrad. Soviet biologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Upon graduation from the First Moscow Medical Institute in 1956, Georgiev went to work at the A. N. Severtsov Institute of Animal Morphology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN SSSR). In 1963 he became head of a laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the AN SSSR. His main work has been in molecular biology. He discovered in animal cells a new type of ribonucleic acid—nuclear RNA, similar to DNA (d-RNA)—the predecessor of messenger RNA (1961). Georgiev discovered informosomes, particles in cell nuclei that contain messenger RNA, and decoded their structure (1964).
