Akhvlediani, Georgii Saridanovich
Born Apr. 13, 1887, in the village of Derchi, near Kutaisi. Soviet orientalist and linguist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939) and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1941). Graduated from the universities of Kharkov and Petrograd. Akhvlediani is one of the founders of the University of Tbilisi. His main works are in the area of Indo-Iranian studies, including Ossetian studies (Collected Works on the Ossetian Language, vol. 1, 1960) and Caucasian studies (phonetics of the Kartveli and Gori Caucasian languages), and general linguistics (the theory of phonemes, problems of phonological syntagmatics, and questions of experimental phonetics). He is the author of textbooks for upper and secondary schools. He is a specialist in the theory and practice of logopedics. WORKS[Ahvlediani, G. S.] Sanskkritti.
