Gerhart, Emanuel Vogel (gâr`härt), 1817–1904, American minister of the German Reformed Church and educator, b. Freeburg, Pa. Gerhart was president of Heidelberg College (1851–55), of Franklin and Marshall College (1855–66), and of the theological seminary at Mercersburg and later at Lancaster, Pa. (1868–1904). He influenced the doctrinal development of the German Reformed Church (see Evangelical and Reformed Church Evangelical and Reformed Church, Protestant denomination formed by the merger (1934) of the Reformed Church in the United States and the Evangelical Synod of North America. Both of these bodies had originated in the Reformation in Europe.
