Gernet, Mikhail Nikolaevich 

Born July 12, 1874, in Ardatov, now in the Mordovian ASSR; died Jan. 16, 1953, in Moscow. Soviet lawyer, a specialist in the fields of criminal and corrective-labor law. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1928) and doctor of jurisprudence (1936).

Gernet was an assistant professor at Moscow University from 1902 to 1911. In 1911 he became a professor at the Petersburg Psychoneurological Institute, and later at Moscow State University. Gernet was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1947) and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
