Gernrode

a city in the German Democratic Republic, near Halle, in the northeastern foothills of the Harz Mountains. Population, 5,100 (1965). Lumbering, quarrying, and brickmaking are carried on in the surrounding region. Gernrode is a climatic health resort surrounded by large forested areas. The city is the site of St. Cyriakus, an early Romanesque church of a former Benedictine monastery (founded in 961), noted for the majesty of its basilica with eastern and western apses, flat ceilings, choirs, and Romanesque reliefs symbolically representing the Holy Sepulchre (c. 1100).
