Gevond
Dates of birth and death unknown. Armenian historian of the eighth century; author of a political history of Armenia from 640 to 788. Gevond was an eyewitness of the events recounted in the last part of the book. He describes the establishment of Arab rule in Armenia and the heroic struggle of the Armenians against the aggressors. The information on the popular uprisings of 703, 748, 762, and 774-775 is particularly valuable. The book includes letters of the Arabian caliph Omar II and of the Byzantine emperor Leo III. The work was first published in Paris—in a French translation in 1856 and in Armenian in 1857. WORKSIstoriia khalifov vardapeta Gevonda, pisatelia VIII v. St. Petersburg, 1862.
