Ghardaia

Ghardaïa 

a city in Algeria, located in the northern part of the Sahara, Oasis Department. Population, 46,600 (1966). Caravan route junction. Ghardaïa is the trade, handicraft, and religious center of the Mzab oases. There is handicraft production of rugs, woolen fabrics, pottery, and other goods. Northwest of Ghardai’a is Hassi R’Mel, a large natural gas extraction center.

Summary: "Building quality should be our challenge during the current five-year term," affirmed Housing and Urban Planning Minister Noureddine Moussa at the opening of a technical day Wednesday in Ghardaia (600km south of Algiers), devoted to the assessment of the actions undertaken on the wake of the floods that hit the region in October 2008.
An earlier toll said only seven people had been hurt during the fighting that erupted after Friday prayers near the city of Ghardaia, some 600 kilometres (370 miles) south of Algiers.
