Gibson, Charles (1920–85) historian; born in Buffalo, N.Y. A Yale Ph.D., he ended his teaching career at the University of Michigan (1965–85). His groundbreaking ethnohistorical studies of the colonial period greatly broadened the scope of Latin American historical studies.
