Gibson, Charles (1920–85) historian; born in Buffalo, N.Y. A Yale Ph.D., he ended his teaching career at the University of Michigan (1965–85). His groundbreaking ethnohistorical studies of the colonial period greatly broadened the scope of Latin American historical studies. His books include The Colonial Period in Latin American History (1958) and The Aztecs under Spanish Rule (1964).
