Gil y Zárate, Antonio

Born Dec. 1, 1793, in San Ildefonso; died Jan. 27, 1861, in Madrid. Spanish playwright.

Gil y Zárate took part in the Spanish Revolution of 1820–23. His earliest literary works were comedies of everyday family life, such as Beware of Brides, or A Lesson to Youth (1826), and tragedies, such as Blanca of Borbon (staged 1835). Gil y Zárate then turned to romanticism and wrote many antiabsolutist historical dramas, including Charles II the Bewitched (1837), William Tell (1838), and Valiant Guzmán (1847).
