In east-central AZ, east of Phoenix; organized Feb 8, 1881 (prior to statehood) from Maricopa and Pinal counties. Name Origin: For the Gila River, which forms part of the county's southern boundary. Some sources suggest the name may refer to the Gila monster.

Area (sq mi): 4795.74 (land 4767.70; water 28.03). Pop per sq mi: 10.80.
Pop 2005: 51,663. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.60%; 1990-2000 27.60%. Pop 2000: 51,335 (White 68.90%; Black or African American 0.40%; Hispanic or Latino 16.60%; Asian 0.40%; Other 21.40%). Foreign born: 3.60%. Median age: 42.30.
Income 2000: per capita $16,315; median household $30,917; Pop below poverty level: 17.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,945-$21,454.
Unemployment 2004: 6.60%. Change from 2000: 0.70%. Median travel time to work: 20.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 12.30%.
