Gilashvili, Pavel Georgievich

Born May 2, 1918, in Tbilisi. Soviet state and party figure. Member of the CPSU since 1939.

The son of an office worker, Gilashvili graduated from the Higher Party School Under the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1956. In 1934 he became a metalworker and toolmaker at a plant in Tbilisi. He undertook Komsomol work in 1937. Gilashvili served in the Soviet Army from 1939 to 1945 and fought in the Great Patriotic War. Between 1945 and 1958 he was a member of the staffs of the Central Committee of the Komsomol and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia; he served as first secretary of a series of city committees of the Communist Party of Georgia. From 1958 to 1967 he was a member of the staff of the Central Committee of the CPSU.

Gilashvili was chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Abkhazian ASSR from 1967 to 1972 and first secretary of the Tbilisi city committee of the Communist Party of Georgia from 1972 to 1976. In 1976 he became chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Georgian SSR and deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR; he was also named a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU.

A deputy to the eighth through tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Gilashvili has received two Orders of the October Revolution, two other orders, and various medals.
