On the southwestern border of VA, west of Roanoke; organized Jan 16, 1806 from Montgomery and Tazewell counties, VA, and Monroe County (now WV). Name Origin: For William Branch Giles (1762-1830), U.S. senator from VA (1804-15) and governor (1827-30).
