Gillingham (jĭl`ĭng-əm), city (1991 pop. 92,531) and district, Kent, SE England, on the Medway River. Some of the Chatham dockyards (repair and supply facilities) are in Gillingham. Naval and military establishments (notably the Royal School of Military Engineering) are there, in addition to resort facilities. Manufactures include clothing, chemicals, furniture, and electrical components.
