Gillingham (jĭl`ĭng-əm), city (1991 pop. 92,531) and district, Kent, SE England, on the Medway River. Some of the Chatham dockyards (repair and supply facilities) are in Gillingham. Naval and military establishments (notably the Royal School of Military Engineering) are there, in addition to resort facilities. Manufactures include clothing, chemicals, furniture, and electrical components.

Gillingham 

a city and port in the county of Kent, Great Britain. Located at the mouth of the Medway River. Population, 90,900 (1970). The primary source of employment is the naval base in Chatham, where there are ship repair and other related enterprises. There are cement plants in Gillingham.
