Gilmer, John Adams (1805–68) U.S. representative; born in Guilford County, N.C. Educated in farm schools, he was a lawyer and Whig Party activist, serving in the North Carolina senate (1846–56) and in the U.S. Congress (1857–63), opposing secession until war was inevitable.
